Free Online Games for Seniors, Without Downloading Anything

You don't need new apps, a new password or help from the grandchildren to enjoy a good game of cards. Free online games for seniors can run straight from a web page, so you open the page and start playing. If you have ever enjoyed patience at the kitchen table or the crossword in the newspaper, you will feel at home.

This guide suggests familiar games, explains how to make them easier to see and use, and shows how to avoid the misleading adverts found on many websites.

Familiar games to start with

You probably know many of these already. All of them open in your web browser with nothing to install.

Card games

  • Klondike Solitaire: the classic patience game most people simply call solitaire.
  • FreeCell: every card is face up, so it is all thinking and almost no luck.
  • Spider Solitaire: start with one suit, then move up when you are ready.
  • Hearts and Spades: classic table games, with computer players filling the other seats.

Word and number puzzles

Calm games with tiles and pictures

  • Mahjong Solitaire: match pairs of free tiles until the board is clear.
  • Jigsaw Puzzles: choose anywhere from 12 to 70 pieces, with no missing piece under the sofa.
  • Memory Pairs: turn the cards and find each matching pair.

No time limits and no rush

Most of the games above let you take as long as you like. You can stop for a cup of tea and carry on afterwards. Your game can usually be picked up where you left it, because it is saved in your browser.

If you prefer a calmer game, keep an eye out for the ones that use a timer, such as Quiz Comet, and leave those for when you want a bit of excitement. The Slow breath and Old soul lists gather our gentler and more traditional games.

How to make games easier to see and use

A few small changes can make playing far more comfortable.

  • Make everything bigger: hold Ctrl and press the + key (on a Mac, Command and +). Press Ctrl and 0 to go back to normal size.
  • Look for the Options menu in our solitaire, sudoku, mahjong, crossword and word search games. It has a Bigger game board setting.
  • Use the Hint and Undo buttons freely. They are there to be used, and nobody is keeping score but you.
  • Play on the largest screen you have. A tablet or computer gives you more room than a phone.
  • Tap or click rather than drag. In our solitaire games, you can click a card and then click where it should go.
  • Turn the sound off with the sound button on the game page if it distracts you.

How to avoid misleading adverts

Many free websites carry adverts, and some are designed to look like part of the page. The rule to remember is simple: a game that runs on a web page never needs you to download or install anything.

  • Ignore any large "Download" button. It is very likely an advert.
  • If a message says your computer has a virus and gives you a number to call, it is a scam. Close the page and do not call.
  • Never give card details or personal information to play a game described as free.
  • If a pop-up will not close, close the whole browser and open it again.
  • If you are unsure about something, stop and ask someone you trust. A game can always wait.

A word about games and brain health

You will often see claims that puzzles keep the mind young. We would rather be straightforward: these games are made to be enjoyed, and we make no medical claims about them. Play them because they are fun and absorbing. If you have concerns about your memory or health, your doctor is the right person to ask.

Games can also be a nice thing to share. Try Seed Circle or Hive Holdfast with a grandchild, taking turns on the same screen.

Common questions

Do I have to download anything or create an account?

No. Our games open in your web browser, and there is no account or password to remember.

Are these games really free?

Yes, they are free to play. Our own games don't show ads on their pages, while licensed games from our partner may show them.

Can I play on a tablet?

Yes. Our own games work on tablets and phones as well as computers. A tablet is a comfortable choice because of its larger screen.

What if I close the page by accident?

Many games keep your place in your browser, so open the same game again on the same device. Progress does not move between devices.

Which game should I try first?

If you enjoy cards, start with Klondike Solitaire. If you prefer words, try the Easy Crossword.
