Free Online Games With No Downloads: How It Works and What to Play

You have ten spare minutes and want to play something. You don't want an installer, an update, an account or a full hard drive. That is exactly what free online games with no downloads are for: you open a page and the game is there.

This guide explains how these games work, what "free" usually means, how to tell a safe page from a shady one, and where to start. If you would rather just play, browse all our games or pick one of the BrovyGames originals.

How a game can run without a download

Modern browsers can run full games by themselves. When you open a browser game, the page sends the game's code and pictures to your browser, which runs them much as it would run any other website. Nothing is installed, and no program is added to your computer or phone.

To be precise, your browser does keep some of those files for a while so that the page opens faster next time. That is normal, and it is the same thing that happens on every site you visit. You can clear these files in your browser settings whenever you like.

What you gain, and what you give up

Playing in the browser suits short, casual sessions very well. It is not automatically better than an installed game, so it helps to know the trade-offs.

What you gain

  • You start in seconds, with no installer and no updates to wait for.
  • It uses almost no storage, which helps on small laptops, tablets and older phones.
  • The same page works on a computer, tablet or phone.
  • You can try something and leave without having anything to uninstall.

What you give up

  • Very large 3D games still run better as installed programs.
  • Most games need an internet connection, at least while they load.
  • Progress is often saved in that browser only, so it does not follow you to another device.
  • Clearing your browsing data can erase your saved progress and scores.

What "free" usually means

Somebody has to pay for free games, and usually it is advertisers. Most free game sites show ads around or inside their games, and some games also offer optional purchases. Neither is a scam in itself, but you should know what to expect before you start.

On BrovyGames, our own games don't show ads on their pages. Licensed games in the wider catalogue come from a partner, and those games may show ads. None of our games asks you to make an account before you play.

How to spot a page you should leave

A genuine no-download game should never need you to install anything. The warning signs are easy to learn:

  • A large green "Download" or "Play now" button that starts a file download. On many sites these are really adverts, so look carefully before you click.
  • A message saying your browser, video player or antivirus must be updated before you can play.
  • A warning that your device is infected. Close the tab, because a web page cannot know this.
  • A demand for your card details to play a game described as free.
  • A request to allow notifications from a site you have only just opened. You can safely choose Block.

Good free games to try first

If a browser game will not start

  1. Reload the page. A file may simply have failed to load the first time.
  2. Update your browser to the latest version.
  3. Turn off any extension that blocks scripts for this one site, as it can stop a game from loading.
  4. Close other tabs if the game is slow, especially on an older device.
  5. Try another game. If that one works, the problem is with that one game and not your device.

Common questions

Are free online games with no downloads safe?

A game that runs in your browser doesn't install anything, which removes the main risk of downloaded programs. You still need ordinary care with adverts: don't download files, install updates or enter card details because a page tells you to.

Do I need an account to play?

Not on BrovyGames. Your progress and scores are saved in your own browser, so there is no sign-up form to fill in.

Do no-download games work on a phone?

Many do, including our own games. A few licensed games are designed for a keyboard or a large screen, so if one feels awkward on a phone, try another.

Can I play offline?

Treat these as online games. They need a connection to load, and it is safest to assume that you need to stay connected while you play.
